Fighting Climate Change
We firmly believe climate change is everyone’s issue, and by listening to our students we understand that climate action is a key priority for most of them.
As role models of positive behaviours, we need to be purposeful and proactive. In recent years our buildings have been equipped with the largest school solar system in Australia, which to date has saved over 1958 metric tonnes in carbon emissions. In addition to harnessing natural resources via rooftop solar panels, we have installed below-ground water tanks; we treat wastewater in a purpose-built facility and capture water in our various dams for all irrigation.
Finding Ways Forward
Sustainability is an ever-evolving conversation, and there will always be opportunities to improve. We are keenly aware that each of us plays an integral role in creating a more sustainable future. Rather than compounding the problem, Sheldon College is committed to contributing to the solution.
Throughout 2024, Sheldon College has undertaken participation in the QIS BGA Sustainability workshops. The events bring together a series of representatives from various Independent Schools in Queensland.
The workshops focus on developing a comprehensive sustainability framework for our College, addressing various aspects such as energy and carbon management, water cycle management, and nature-based solutions. Our team are engaging with experts and peers to learn about best practices and innovative strategies to enhance our sustainability efforts.
Participants attend sessions on global megatrends, climate literacy, and specific action plans will be tailored to our needs. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, ensuring a greener future for our students and community.
These workshops will shape our sustainability initiatives moving forward and underline our goal of positioning Sheldon College as a leader in sustainable education.
