Recognising the Pioneering Founders of Sheldon College

Fri, December 15, 2017

February 2017 marked Sheldon College’s 20th Anniversary. The College commemorated this special anniversary through a program of outstanding events and celebrations throughout 2017.

Sheldon College is now recognised as one of Queensland’s most progressive independent schools. Sheldon College opened as an independent, non-denominational, not-for-profit, co-educational College in February 1997 with 110 students and six teachers. The College is now a vibrant community and thousands of graduates have passed through the College gates.

To mark the end of the 20th Celebrations, a formal dinner was held to acknowledge the many people who have helped to shape the future of Sheldon College over the last twenty years. The Sheldon College Community was recognised over the course of the evening and a special presentation was held for the Pioneering Founders of the College. A commemorative plaque was unveiled by the Inaugural Chair of the Sheldon College Board, Mr Patrick Gay AM and Ms Rachel Hunter, current Sheldon College Board Chair, in recognition of the Pioneering Founders of the College:

Mr Patrick Gay AM (Chairman)
Dr Lyn Bishop (Founding Principal)
Mr Bob Bishop
Mr Mike McKay APM
Mr David Cameron
Mr Paul Cooper

The six founders were also presented with individual plaques to acknowledge their unwavering friendship and loyal service to the College.

Ms Rachel Hunter said “Sheldon College is the product of vision, commitment and an unwavering passion for education. The inaugural Board comprised of people who shared these attributes. It is not an easy task to establish a school. To do so requires dedication and resilience, sustained by an absolute belief in the ability of every child to achieve excellent educational outcomes.

The College recognises the unique contribution of each individual member of the inaugural Board.  We would also like to acknowledge and pay special tribute to the late Dr Noel Christie who was a critical friend of the College from the beginning, and at one time, a former member of the governing body.”

“The Founding Principal, Dr Lyn Bishop had a vision to open a school which would leave a lasting legacy for children in the Redlands. Sheldon College will continue to transform the lives of students through first class teaching and learning as the College enters its 21st year.”
