Middle and Senior College Celebration of Excellence 2017

Fri, November 03, 2017

One of the pinnacles of the Sheldon College year is the Celebration of Excellence Ceremony. In the 20th year since Sheldon College opened, last week students were presented with excellence awards at the Middle and Senior College Celebration of Excellence Ceremony, held on-campus.  Awards were presented to students from Year 5 to Year 12 which reflect individual achievements of excellence in academic, sporting and cultural arenas of College life.

In 2017, our Middle and Senior College students have achieved outstanding results in NAPLAN testing with 100% of students achieving above benchmark in Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, and Numeracy.  Students in the Arts program, who are generally known for setting benchmarks across all Arts disciplines have won a number of local and national competitions in dance, entertainment and lyrics, and fashion design.  Our sporting achievers were named the 2017 overall champions of the Greater Brisbane Championships (GBC) sports competition, and winners of the GBC Swimming, Cross Country and Track & Field Championships for the third year in a row.  Team successes include five main season Basketball Club Premierships and 29 GBC Team premierships.

Dr Lyn Bishop, Founder and Principal/CEO said, “Once again in 2017, our high expectations, the mutual respect between teachers and students, and the nurturing environment that Sheldon College provides for students, has allowed our students to achieve their absolute best.  These outstanding achievements have been attained within the context of our theme for this year – Teaching with the Heart in Mind”.

Every year Sheldon College students continue to succeed with their incredible potential and innate desire to improve every aspect of their performance.  This success can be attributed to our wonderful students and our outstanding academic staff.

During the ceremony students were inspired by keynote speaker Professor Joseph M. Siracusa, Human Security and International Diplomacy at RMIT University.  Professor Siracusa is internationally known for his writings on nuclear history, international diplomacy and presidential politics and is also a frequent political affairs commentator in the Australian media, including ABC Radio.
