The Australian School of the Arts (ASTA)
Mr Darren Harvey - Director - Australian School of the Arts
The Australian School of the Arts (ASTA) Professionals Program is an audition based, specialist excellence co-curricular course that provides an unparalleled Arts education for talented students in Years 9 to 12 at Sheldon College. Through the provision of innovative and creative courses and an uncompromised high quality academic education, students become equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to follow their chosen pathways into Arts industries or tertiary institutions.
The ASTA Professionals Program creates and nurtures resilient, confident, creative, passionate and compassionate individuals. These young people have the unique opportunity to marry their love for and talent in the Arts, with a regular Academic program, which will still qualify them for an OP.
ASTA students are not typical high school students. They are focused on their future and are passionate and dedicated about preparing for it. In addition to their normal curriculum hours, students spend their time in lessons, practice sessions, workshops and rehearsals as they prepare for all aspects of performance and presentation. In alignment with Sheldon College’s Values, it is the Australian School of the Arts’ focus to educate the whole person. Students will grow artistically and intellectually, developing as a person and as a citizen. The skills students develop through the ASTA curriculum intend to carry them through life regardless of their field of interest. Students will be prepared for what they need to be ready for when moving on.
The ASTA Professionals program is about rewarding, stimulating and growing people; positioning students to be able to competitively function as adults in society.
The program consists of four areas of study: Combined Performing Arts (CPA), Visual Art, Film and Television (FTV) and Contemporary Music.

School of Combined Performing Arts (CPA)
The School of Combined Performing Arts (CPA) offers comprehensive training in Acting, Dance and Voice. It is specifically aimed at talented students who possess a passion for the Performing Arts and a vision for a career in any facet of the industry.
The course is unique in that it offers creative classroom training to provide solid foundations across the three major performing arts disciplines. This is complemented through participation in regular master classes and workshops directed by industry trained specialists at the cutting edge of their field. Further performance exposure is gained through weekly performance workshops, providing regular skill building and performance practice.
The Year 9 and 10 CPA course consists of studies in Acting, Singing and Dance (Foundation and Intermediate levels) and is designed to give students exposure to each of these platforms. Whilst students often have a tendency to lean more heavily towards one specific art form, what underpins our philosophy is a fundamental belief that every performer should be exposed to all three of these genres as it will serve as their foundation knowledge going forward.
In the Year 11 and 12 CPA course, students will be able to plan their own pathway and select subjects that appeal specifically to them (much like University). The combined nature of the program subscribes to that of the students interests and passions.
The ASTA CPA course looks for students who desire to become capable, well-rounded performers in the future.
